Tennessee motorcycle accident sheds light on inattentiveness

Motorcycles are common vehicles on the roads of eastern Tennessee, yet many motorists still fail to be cautious around them. An inattentive, distracted, or negligent driver can easily miss a rider and cause a serious accident. This was the exact scenario recently in Johnson City, Tennessee.

There, the driver of a pickup truck turned left in front of a motorcycle, striking the rider. The truck driver's failure to yield to the motorcyclist resulted in the rider's death. Johnson City police state that more than 70 percent of all motorcycle accidents are caused by similar failure to yield situations.

Drivers typically say that they did not see the motorcycle. In addition to driver inattentiveness, the lack of safety features on motorcycles often make the victims of these accidents more prone to serious injuries that require long-term care and can even cause death.

A tragic accident of any kind can rip a family apart. Injuries can lead to permanent disability and death. In addition to tearing the fabric of an individual and family's life, these accidents can financially overwhelm victims and their families.

Since so many motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent drivers, victims have the opportunity to recover from them for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost wages and pain and suffering. This compensation can lift the burden of unjustifiable debt placed on victims and help move their lives to a better place.

It is imperative for the safety of all that Tennessee drivers become more aware of motorcyclists. Traffic laws and driver/rider safety tips only go so far. The knowledge of potential lawsuits can act to put drivers on notice of the vulnerability of motorcycle riders and the importance of being aware of them.
