Percent of older drivers in wrecks decreases

Many Tennessee drivers may fear certain drivers. Of course we all fear intoxicated drivers, but some feel young motorists' inexperience poses dangers while others think older drivers' raise risks. A new study has positive news, and it may allay some of these concerns.

Safety researchers from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found older drivers are less likely to be in a car wreck than their predecessors. Additionally, the study found these elderly drivers, those aged 70 and older, were less likely to be harmed in the event of a crash. In fact, the number of fatal wrecks amongst older drivers fell 42 percent between 1997 and 2012, a significant decrease. Researchers suggest increased car safety and a healthier elderly population are key factors to the statistical decreases.

Though some drivers may be operating their vehicles more safely, negligence-caused accidents still occur. Motorists still speed, fail to yield, run red lights and drive while intoxicated. Those who are taken by surprise by a negligent driver often end up with serious injuries. In addition to his or her physical and emotional pain and suffering, a victim may also accumulate unrelenting medical expenses.

Perhaps the best way to recover these losses and punish the negligent or distracted driver who harmed a victim is for that victim to file a lawsuit. A personal injury claim succeeds when it can be shown that the defendant's negligence caused the victim's injuries, and those injuries are compensable. If won, a case may bring the victim money for his or her lost wages, medical costs and pain and suffering. Such recoveries might provide not only financial stability, but much deserved comfort.
