Tennessee Labor Day checkpoints nab drunk drivers

Holidays give people reason to celebrate. When the partying involves alcohol, however, the dangers of a drunk driving accident rise. In an attempt to prevent and reduce the occurrence of these accidents, the Tennessee Highway Patrol established DUI checkpoints this past Labor Day. THP seems to claim it as a success.

The statewide effort, operating on the recently implemented "No Refusal" law, netted 74 DUI arrests. The "No Refusal" law allows law enforcement to obtain search warrants for blood samples when suspected impaired drivers refuse blood alcohol tests. It is hoped that this stricter law will discourage intoxicated driving, thus protecting Tennessee motorists.

While these Labor Day statistics seem promising, it is important to realize that drunk driver negligence will continue. The THP reported that no fatal alcohol-related accidents occurred over the holiday weekend, but not that drunk driving accidents were completely abolished. Police efforts can only do so much to protect motorists, and when an accident happens, they can do even less to help victims with their recovery.

Fortunately, the victim of a drunk driving accident has other legal avenues available to obtain compensation. These awards can be used to pay medical expenses, cover lost wages and relieve pain and suffering. This way, victims can obtain the best care possible and focus on rehabilitation and recovery.

Victims of such tragic accidents should not be forced to bear a financial burden unjustly thrust upon them. A lawsuit will prevent this from happening. Victims should act to hold those responsible accountable, and make them pay for the damage they have caused.
