THP seeks to reduce traffic fatalities throughout the state

Though it may be impossible to completely prevent fatal car accidents, there are things the police can do to help limit the number of these tragic accidents. In Tennessee, the Highway Patrol has been asked to step up its game in leading the prevention of fatal accidents.

The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security Commissioner Bill Gibbons recently made a stop in one district to stress the point. Gibbons stated that resources are being deployed to state troopers in a way that will have a maximum impact on the traffic fatality rate in Tennessee. Amongst the tactics discussed was increased crackdown on drunk driving and seat belt violations. Gibbons believes these campaigns have had a positive effect on traffic fatalities and should continue to be pursued.

Campaigns like these are very important to protect drivers on the road, but they do very little for those families already affected by a fatal accident. When one of these accidents occurs, the family may find it difficult to function normally. A hole is left in the family that will never be filled again and, to make matters worse, the family must deal with financial consequences of the Car accident. Also, medical and funeral bills can leave the already devastated family stressed and depressed.

If the deceased's accident was caused by the negligence of another, the family may file a wrongful death lawsuit against that negligent driver. Success on such a claim depends on the family's ability to show actual negligence, such as speeding, intoxication, or inattentiveness, and causation. However, once proven, a case may be won and compensation may be awarded.

The money received from a wrongful death lawsuit may not fill the emotional void left by the loss of a loved one. Yet, the recoveries may help the family pay off accrued medical expenses, funeral expenses, and compensate for the pain and suffering felt by the deceased before passing. With these financial burdens removed and a sense of justice obtained, the family can then move on with life in remembrance of their loved one.
