Boy killed on Tennessee Interstate after hit-and-run car accident

Almost all Tennesseans have experienced a flat tire at one time or another. Though they are often easy to change, the location where one sustains a flat tire can make the procedure more difficult and dangerous. However, so long as other motorists abide by their reasonable duty of care, those changing tires and dealing with other car issues along the roadside should remain safe.

Sadly, this was not the case recently when a 13-year-old boy was struck and killed and changing a tire on the shoulder of Interstate 24. According to police, a 33-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle, causing it to swerve and hit the child. The driver then fled from the scene, but was later found and taken into custody. She has since been charged with failing to give notification of a fatal accident and leaving the scene of a crash. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be dealt.

A car accident like this is always sad and most often preventable. Yet, the negligence of another, whether in the form of distractedness, intoxication or mere inattentiveness, can forever change the life of a family in the blink of an eye. Those who must cope with the loss of a loved one may never fully recover emotionally, and to make matters worse, they often have to deal with unexpected costs associated with the wreck. Incurred medical expense, funeral expenses, and lost wages may all leave a family in a dire financial predicament.

These families may find comfort in knowing they can fight for the compensation they need and deserve. A Knoxville attorney can help them file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent driver who caused the accident, which will succeed if that driver's negligence can be shown to have caused the deceased's death. If a judge or jury is convinced, then compensation may be awarded to a family to offset its financial losses as well as to comfort pain and suffering.
