The prevalence of drunk driving in Tennessee

Our law firm has devoted itself to helping Tennesseans who have been injured in car accidents. While we spend a lot of time talking about distracted driving accidents and what steps are necessary to recover compensation in such an incident, Knoxville residents should be aware of the prevalence of drunk driving.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 2012 saw 295 traffic fatalities caused by drunk driving in Tennessee alone. This accounted for 29 percent of all accident fatalities and was an increase of 14 percent over the statistics from 2011. Alcohol-related accidents topped 5,500, which likely resulted in thousands of injuries. Those who are harmed in these accidents have a difficult road to recovery, often littered with pain and suffering and financial loss. Though law enforcement made more than 29,000 DUI arrests in 2012, it is not enough to protect Tennessee's motorists.

Fortunately, though, those who suffer serious injuries due to a drunk driver's negligence can take their future into their own hands. By filing a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit, victims and their families can not only seek to recover the compensation they need to reach as full a recovery as possible, but they can also shine a bright light on the dangers of drunk driving.

The publicity and immediate impact of a lawsuit could deter other motorists from climbing behind the wheel while intoxicated, possibly saving lives and preventing others from being seriously injured. Therefore, acting on one's legal rights is important not only to the victims themselves, but to society as a whole. Hopefully, by taking the necessary legal steps, Tennesseans can work together to reduce the number of senseless, tragic drunk driving accidents that plague our state.
