Distracted driving remains a serious issue for motorists

Technology has come a long way in the past twenty years. Cell phones and GPS alone have revolutionized the way we communicate and travel. However, despite the advantages emerging technologies may bring us, they often also carry multiple disadvantages that could leave us or others injured. One prominent example can be seen in distracted driving.

There are many things that can take our attention away from the road, including looking for something under a seat and eating, but talking on a cell phone is, perhaps, one of the leading causes of distracted driving. Though hands-free devices have made it easier for individuals to multitask and convinced some that talking on a cell phone while driving can be safe, studies disagree, showing that even hands-free devices can distract motorists.

If distracted, these drivers may run a stop light, swerve into oncoming traffic, or weave into another lane and into another car. Such a car accident can be damaging not only to physical property, but to human life as well. A victim may suffer significant injuries, which may include permanent disability. Financial losses might also strike the victim in the form of medical expenses and lost wages. The lasting effects of these damages can be staggering.

Though several bills and laws have attempted to curb distracted driving, the sad truth is that it continues to be a serious problem throughout the country, including here in Tennessee. While employers can help alleviate the dangers of distracted driving by disallowing employees to talk on the cell phone while driving, it often falls on victims themselves to speak up about the matter. One of the best ways to do so is to file a personal injury lawsuit against the distracted driver who caused them harm. In addition to potentially recovering compensation, taking legal action might also shine a spotlight on such a treacherous problem.
