Some important information for motorcycle safety

Now that Memorial Day has passed and summer seems to be in full swing, many Tennesseans will find themselves taking to their motorcycles and hitting the road. Yet, before doing so, it is important to know some important information about bike riding. For example, riding a motorcycle is more dangerous than driving a car. Though motorcycle fatalities may have dropped in previous years, nationwide they are still double the number of motorcycle deaths in 1997.

Also, bikers should know that helmets really do save lives. In fact, the government has estimated that helmet usage decreased the risk of fatality in a motorcycle wreck by as much as 37 percent. It can also reduce the risk of significant head trauma. Therefore, motorcyclists should be sure to wear a proper helmet.

Antilock braking systems can help prevent accidents from occurring. These systems prevent tires from locking up. Though on a car locked up tires may send the vehicle into a skid, on a motorcycle locked up tires can cause the rider to be thrown and suffer a devastating fall. The chance of a fatal motorcycle accident occurring on a bike with an ABS system is 31 percent lower than for those bikes that do not have such a system.

While there are certain measures that bikers can take to protect themselves, the fact remains that many motorists have motorcycle unawareness. That is to say that they fail to look out for bikers and may not know how best to prevent these tragic wrecks from occurring. Therefore, when a motorcyclist suffers serious injuries at the hand of one of these negligent drivers, he or she may want to consider what can be done to set the matter straight. One of those options is to take legal action.
