Drunk driving accident can hit anyone, anywhere, anytime

It is no secret that drunk drivers take to Tennessee's roads on a daily basis. However, the extent of the problem can be startling. For example, a study has shown that 300,000 people drive drunk in the United States each day. Perhaps just as disconcerting is the fact that only about 4,000 of these drunk drivers are arrested, and nearly half of drivers killed in crashes were under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

In addition, drugged and drunk driving knows no limits. Almost 50 percent of high school sophomores have reported that they have tried alcohol, and many of these students drive a vehicle. Also, more than 10 million people reported that they had driven while under the influence of illegal drugs in 2012. Drunk and drugged drivers can be men and women of all ages and ethnicities, from any economic background and from any neighborhood. In other words, predicting when and where a drunk driver will strike is impossible.

As a result, every day these drivers cause devastating accidents that leave individuals seriously injured, disabled or dead. Coping with the damage caused by these drunk driving accidents can be overwhelming. Along with the physical and emotional losses that must be dealt with, victims must also deal with medical expenses, lost wages, and, if necessary, funeral costs. This is why those affected by a drunk driving accident consider their legal options.

Filing a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit may lead to the recovery of compensation. The intent is that the monetary award, if given, will help the victim or their surviving family repay debt incurred as a result of the accident, ease pain and suffering and provide financial stability. However, winning a personal injury lawsuit can do something else, too. It can emphasize the effects of drunk driving, hopefully raising awareness of the dangers and deterring others from getting intoxicated and climbing behind the wheel.
