Criminal Defense Attorney | Maryville, Tennessee
Sarah Bean Smith is an experienced criminal defense attorney at Costner Greene in Maryville, Tennessee. A significant focus of Sarah’s practice is defending individuals charged with domestic assault and other criminal offenses in Blount County and throughout East Tennessee.
Sarah believes that effective criminal defense begins with early investigation and preparation. She works with clients through every stage of the criminal process—from the initial investigation and first court appearance through preliminary hearings, negotiations, motions, trial, and, when necessary, appeal.
For example, specifically with Domestic Assault charges, Sarah understands that being arrested for domestic assault can immediately affect nearly every aspect of a client’s life. In addition to facing a criminal charge, a person may be prohibited from returning home or contacting a spouse or family member, required to comply with restrictive bond conditions or GPS monitoring, and concerned about the impact an accusation could have on employment, family relationships, reputation, and firearm rights.
Sarah approaches domestic assault cases with the understanding that the circumstances surrounding an arrest are rarely as simple as they may initially appear. She works closely with her clients to understand what actually happened and carefully evaluates the State’s evidence, including witness statements, body-camera footage, 911 recordings, photographs, text messages, medical evidence, prior communications, and other evidence that may provide important context to the allegations.
When appropriate, Sarah also works to address the immediate consequences that follow an arrest, including bond conditions, no-contact restrictions, and other issues affecting a client’s ability to return to normal life while the case is pending.
Criminal Defense Experience
Sarah has represented clients in Tennessee state courts and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee in a wide variety of criminal matters.
Sarah has also served as counsel in complex white-collar criminal matters and government investigations requiring extensive preparation and strategic representation.
Sarah began developing her criminal-defense experience while attending Lincoln Memorial University Duncan School of Law, where she interned with the Blount County Public Defender’s Office. She subsequently joined Costner Greene and has now been a member of the firm for more than 14 years.
Her experience representing clients in both criminal and civil litigation gives Sarah a practical, trial-focused approach to resolving difficult legal problems. She believes clients deserve an attorney who is accessible, prepared, and willing to explain both the legal process and the options available to them.
Sarah was selected to the Super Lawyers Rising Stars list in Criminal Defense for 2025 and 2026.
Sarah and her husband, Shane, live in Maryville with their two sons, Luke and James. Having built both her career and her family in Blount County, Sarah values the opportunity to represent individuals and families in the community she calls home.
"There is an expression that law school does not truly teach you about the practice of law. While some may argue with this statement, I find it to be true. As an attorney, I have been exposed to several different areas of practice, including domestic, criminal, personal injury, medical malpractice, and social security disability cases. Each area of the law brings unique cases and opportunities to help our clients achieve desired results. I have been involved in multiple jury trials that have allowed me to gain experience in the courtroom. However, one thing that is not unique to the area of practice, yet so very important, is the relationships built along the way. Whether your case involves criminal charges or a personal injury, the legal process is just that...a process. And that process allows me to get to know the client. And for me, that is the single greatest benefit of the legal profession."
